**I’m participating in a 31 day blogging challenge for the month of October! All of my posts for this month will be focused on being a blessing to others by looking up from our phones and computers. I am challenging myself to replace the mindless internet/Facebook scrolling with more intentional and purposeful moments of blessing others. Click here to see all the posts in the series! I’m so happy to have you read along on my journey! (Feel free to join me in the “no scroll” challenge! I would love to hear if you do!)**
“Let the weeds that grow in my soul be cut at their roots;
Grant me to know that I truly live only when I live to thee,
that all else is trifling.
Thy presence alone can make me holy, devout, strong and happy.
Abide in me, gracious God.”
I read this recently in the book “The Valley of Vision” and felt that it was another confirmation to take some time away and evaluate my internet and Facebook usage. It was good to read and I was immediately convicted.
The question for me is what does it mean to live to the Lord? If everything else is trifling, what does it mean and look like to live to Him? Lucky for us, God’s word tells us the answer:
“Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with
all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it:
You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
Love God. Love others. That’s what it boils down to.
I think that the order it’s in is really important too. To love others well, as Christ would have us love them, we need to follow the greatest commandment and love the Lord.
The best and most important way for us to be a blessing to others is to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, and mind.
Today, the way I sought to be a blessing to others was being mindful to spend time in God’s word. As a mom to 3 little ones, it’s hard to have my ideal time in the word. You know, in a coffee shop with my Bible and journal, spending at least an uninterrupted hour reading, all while listening to my favorite worship music. This RARELY happens! (I am immensely grateful when it does though!) Mommas, and anyone else who is in a season that doesn’t give you tons and tons of time, we need to let go of the ideal and get in the word when we can!
My favorite tool for getting in the word right now is an app called “She Reads Truth.” There are several Bible reading options, some free and some to pay for, but all are wonderful and rich scripture to soak in. It’s an easy tool to utilize, and much more profitable than scrolling on the internet.
Other things that can be of use to pursue the Lord during our days is to surround ourselves with scripture. I like to hang notecards with scripture or other encouraging quotes around my sink. It’s a place I hang out a lot during my day, so that is a good spot for it to be for me! Trying to be mindful to read and meditate on scripture during our days will help us to love the Lord more, and help us to love others.
Facebook scrolling and mindless internet surfing are the things that most keep me from pursuing the Lord and loving others well, but certainly there are other things that can keep us from these better pursuits. It won’t just be removing my temptation for a month and then I’ll love the Lord perfectly and love others perfectly! It’s going to take an active, daily, moment by moment fight to pursue the best things, and to lay aside all the rest that is trifling.
Praying today that the weeds in my soul will be cut at their roots. That I will know that I’ll only truly live when I live to the Lord, and that everything else is trifling. And, that God will abide in me.
Praying that for you too.
