A Little Humor for Your Day {The “My Kid Hasn’t Slept Well in a While” version}

Motherhood can be tough. It’s one of the toughest things I have ever attempted to do. But, having little people who are learning how to be big people often gives me plenty to smile and laugh about. My littles are funny, I mean like really really funny! Some of the things they say absolutely crack me up! I’m amazed and laugh a lot at some of the things they do.

Though, there are moments that don’t seem so funny, but if you look hard you may be able to find some humor in situations, or at least be able to laugh about them later on.

Recently I have encountered a situation with my 3 year old that’s a little between needing to find the humor and just being right out hilarious. For about a week or 2 (or more, maybe. My brain’s a little foggy…) my youngest has not slept well. He’s been waking up crying at least once (sometimes a lot more) each night anywhere from 11:00 at night to 2:00 in the morning. I have never experienced this with my other 2 kiddos, so when it started I was tempted to be frustrated and wish that he would JUST GO BACK TO SLEEP!! (See, not a funny moment. Needed to really look for humor.)

Well, then he started saying some rather funny things in these moments of waking up that has made the whole business of helping him back to sleep much more fun.

(Nathan cries)
Me: Hey buddy, what’s wrong?
Nathan: (hysterically crying) I want some gum!!!
Me: Well, it’s the middle of the night. We can’t have any gum right now. Go back to sleep.
Nathan: Ok….(goes back to sleep)

(Nathan cries)
Me: Hey buddy, what’s wrong?
Nathan: (hysterically crying) I want to watch a movie!!!
Me: Well, everyone is asleep now, so we can’t watch a movie. Go back to sleep.
Nathan: (he cried a while longer this time) No!!!!
Me: Would you like some water?
Nathan: Ok.
Me: Now go back to sleep.
Nathan: Ok…(goes back to sleep)

(Nathan cries)
Me: Hey buddy, what’s wrong?
Nathan: (crying hysterically) Sissy won’t share with me!!!
Me: Well, your sister has been asleep for a while, so I think you just need to go back to sleep.
Nathan: Ok…(goes back to sleep)

(Nathan cries)
Me: Hey buddy, what’s wrong?
Nathan: (crying hysterically) I want to hang out!!!
Me: Well, why don’t we hang out tomorrow? We can do that.
Nathan: Ok…(goes back to sleep)

(Nathan cries)
Me: Hey buddy, what’s wrong?
Nathan: (crying hysterically) I need to wash my hands!!!
Me: No you don’t. It’s the middle of the night. You need to go to sleep.
Nathan: (crying hysterically) Can I have some handwash!?!! (hand sanitizer)
Me: I don’t have any right now. Let’s go back to sleep now.
Nathan: Ok… (goes back to sleep)

Seriously! When he cries now in the middle of the night I’m kind of anxious to hear what it is he’s going to cry about! It has been so funny, and has helped my attitude in getting up with him hugely!

Now, I know you may be thinking, “You should just let him cry it out and go back to sleep on his own.” I tried that before, and this is what happened…

(Nathan cries)
Me: (I do nothing. I just lay in bed)
Nathan: (crying, and crying, and crying!)
Karis: (very groggy and sleepy) Mom, Nathan is crying and needs you.
Me: (Ughh…)

So, my daughter will be the enforcer if I try to just let him cry! 🙂

If you’re going through a challenging time with your kids, or just a challenging season of life, look for the humor! There is probably some there somewhere!

Cheerful heart

Have a happy, humor filled Wednesday everyone!
